AIO Spring Break Invite Cancelled and Other Roommate issues
I’m reposting this because I realized the way my previous post was titled and the way I explained myself was very confusing/misleading for many. So hopefully this is more clear.
I’m a college freshman living in a dorm with a roommate, Taylor. At the beginning of the year, we were cordial. She was very kind. We WEREN’T close friends, BUT we were cordial and got along. For instance, sometimes she would give me food if she ordered DoorDash, and we hung out with some of the same people (even then I didn’t feel as connected with the friend group either, but they kept inviting me out and I didn’t mind so I would hang out with them anyways).
Over time, things changed. I realized I didn’t enjoy the same friend group because I don’t like smoking or partying or some of the "jokes" they'd make etc, so I stopped hanging out with them as much. Around that time, Taylor got close with another friend, Mia, and started spending more time with her, sometimes hanging out late. To emphasize, that is completely fine. I don’t care about losing closeness with her; we didn't really have it to begin with. I was actually happy for her because I had more space in the room and she seemed to be finding friends she connects with.
Here’s where the problem started. During the second semester when she was around friends, she would sometimes side with them even if it contradicted what we had previously discussed regarding her opinion on a topic and it would make me seem like the odd one out. (which I understand since she was closer to them, but I still found it annoying), or she would act differently in public, like at her workplace. She would sometimes scoff at me or mess up my orders when I ordered something she didn't feel like making, or get upset over small things. I would also like to preface that I wasn’t the only one with experiences like this. There were actually many students who complained about the workers there being in bad moods, not respecting allergies, being fatphobic, being homophobic, etc. I don’t always go to her job, but she works in 1 of 2 food places on campus. I usually go to the other one, but I sometimes go to the one she works at especially if the first option is closed. We don’t ALWAYS have a problem, but I took note of the times we do. Alone, we usually didn't have issues, but in front of others she sometimes acted two-faced. The final straw was when she yelled over me while I was sick and slammed the door in my face.
I talked to her about this and the issue got resolved and she apologized for everything and explained herself well (Also she's usually genuinely a sweet girl, so that's also why I was caught off guard by the sudden treatment). I also considered that one of the reasons she seemed to be ruder to me when she was with friends could possibly be that she was talking to them about me in some way (which is fine since friends are supposed to be emotional support). So, I told her to tell me if there was anything she didn’t like that I did. She said two things were bothering her: the room smelled like food that week while I was sick (I’ll admit that I was letting my yogurt cups pile up a little on my desk since I was mainly blowing my nose, eating, and sleeping), but other than that, cleanliness wise she thought I was doing well and was usually pretty clean. The other problem was that I wasn’t taking out the trash enough (I hadn’t known she wanted me to take it out because at the beginning of the year when I offered to she told me she was fine with me sharing her trash can and I didn’t need to take it out since it was hers, but I understand I should've just asked to clarify. Also the trashcan definitely has been filling faster recently due to me, her, and her friend Mia using it consistently). I apologized for both of my issues, and took out the trash, and bought Febreze to keep the room fresh for after I eat.
At the end of our conversation, she told me she would be going on a family trip for spring break, so I couldn’t stay at her house anymore. This is two weeks before spring break. I don’t believe they owe me their house to stay at, but I do think they had an obligation to tell me ahead of time. I come from a poor background, and scrambling $200 with two weeks’ notice is difficult. My roommate offered to help if she needed to, but currently I mainly need money, so I told her it was fine. Also apparently, her mom tried to tell me about the trip earlier this semester, but I never saw the call and the mom never called back to inform me because she either thought I was busy or ignoring her. I apologized to her mother when I found out about the miss call and any misunderstanding it may have created
Part of me wants to be mad at my roommate for telling me at the last minute and part of me wants to wonder if she was going to tell me at that time or if I never had the conversation with her, was she going to tell me a lot later? Honestly, I understand there’s no concrete evidence for that so I’m not holding that against her plus her mom planned the trip and not her so I can’t hold that against her either. Ultimately, I am not mad about the trip itself through and hope they have fun, but more of the situation and everything that possibly led up to it.
I am trying to keep things peaceful until the semester ends and plan to find a different roommate next year. I don’t think she or the people in our hall are bad, and I’m glad she’s happier and more involved. I just feel hurt and annoyed mainly because of the spring break timing, combined with everything else that piled up. I am not holding anything against her personally. I just need to express my feelings because my subconscious is filling in “what ifs” and assumptions that I have no concrete evidence for and don’t want to believe.
I would like to iterate that currently, since me and my roommate discussed our issues I felt a lot better about the situation and I’m not entirely mad at her, but the feelings for everything that happened still remain a little (which I think is mainly coming from me being upset about the $200, even though it’s not her fault, so now instead of being able to push the small things in the past down it’s coming up all at once). I think I’m more so mad at the situations I’ve been put in and not entirely the people themselves.
I am used to being gaslit at home, so sometimes I question whether my feelings are reasonable. I am asking for outside perspectives. Does this situation seem not so good to others, or am I overreacting? I know this is definitely not as bad as many roommate situations so that's why I'm a little confused.
Please be respectful in your responses.
TL;DR My college roommate and I were cordial but not close. I was ok with her becoming distant, but not when she started to sometimes become disrespectful around friends. My spring break invite was also cancelled two weeks out due to a family trip, which I understand isn’t her fault, but it’s hard financially to cover $200 on short notice. I’m mainly frustrated by the situation and not necessarily the people and how everything piled up in a short time and want to know if I’m overreacting.
