Col. Young...

I'm having a binge watch of SGU for the first time since it came out. The one character who bothers me the most is Colonel Young. He seems incapable of listening, especially in the first half of season 1, before the mutiny. Rush is an expert in Ancient technology and seems to be able to read Ancient. Wray is a competent people person who has the trust of all the civilians on board, many of whom are also scientists that Young will need in order to survive. But Young won't ever give them the benefit of the doubt or hear what they have to say, presumably because they present a threat to his leadership.

He is consistently told that they can't do something because of power requirements, personnel limitations, or their inability to control the technology. Instead of hearing them out and asking for alternatives, he generally makes a demand to "make it work," then yells at Rush or Eli when it blows up.

Radical thought, the mutiny would have never even been on the table if Young had listened to his people from the beginning. After a while, I might have pulled a Rush and kept as much information to myself as I could too. After all, there's little chance of being heard and trusted with Young in charge.

How does an Air Force officer make it to Colonel without showing the the willingness and ability to listen to his experts?
