Went 17 yrs without naming the dynamic, seeking advice!
TLDR at the bottom.
My partner and I have been together since we were kids. We’re incredibly in love and very happy together. For context, I have a fairly prominent presence in another fetish community (feedism) as both a model and participant. There is some indirect crossover with this community, which is part of why I’m here. What I’m really interested in discussing is a much bigger dynamic that exists in my personal life with my partner.
Looking back, I can see that my husband has always had very submissive energy toward me. He has been incredibly devoted to me for our entire relationship, almost like a sub who has always been waiting for direction. The challenge is that I had a very rigid idea of what dom/sub relationships were supposed to look like, and that prevented me from recognizing what was already happening between us.
Over time, and especially through exploring different art and content in kink communities, I’ve started to see that the energy between us actually reflects a lot of those dynamics. We’ve both been consciously working on unlearning some of our old assumptions and stigmas around roles and power exchange.
Part of what confused me for a long time is that my husband is very dominant in everyday life. He’s strong, driven, successful, and very capable. But the more we’ve talked about it, the more I’ve realized that he frames much of that success as a form of devotion to me. His accomplishments, personal advancement, and even building his body often feel like things he’s doing *for me*, to enrich my life.
We’ve been talking about these dynamics more openly over the past few years, but recently things reached a new level. A few weeks ago he sat me down and had a very emotional conversation. He told me he has been doing a lot of personal work and wanted to be completely honest about what he desires.
He said that he struggles with motivation sometimes, but when I direct him to do something, even something small, he feels energized and purposeful. Being given direction by me makes him feel revitalized.
He also opened up about wanting to explore more physical expressions of submission and service. For example, he mentioned interest in things like impact play (whipping), biting, and other forms of physical intensity. He loves centering things around my pleasure and comfort: things like cleaning and cooking under my direction.
When I casually mentioned the idea of a collar out of curiosity, he practically melted. He really loves the concept of ownership and visible symbols of devotion. He’s even joked about things like sleeping in a cage next to my bed once a week.
He’s also a powerlifter, and he enjoys dedicating bigger and harder lifts to me as acts of devotion. He likes the idea of physical displays of service and strength being directed toward me. He’s even talked about being walked on a chain.
All of this actually fits very naturally alongside our existing feedism dynamic. I’m already a very spoiled fat girl in that dynamic, and he clearly enjoys nurturing and serving me in those ways. The new elements he’s describing feel like they extend that dynamic rather than contradict it.
The issue is that while this all feels very natural between us, it has mostly remained unspoken until recently. Now that we’re trying to bring it into the open more consciously, I feel a little unsure about how to actually *step into* the role he’s asking me to take.
He is definitely the more verbal one between us. In fact, he joked that sometimes I should gag him just to get him to stop talking. Because of that, I feel a little self-conscious about directing him or praising him. I worry about sounding awkward or silly.
I know a lot of this information exists online or on FetLife, but the sheer volume of general advice out there feels overwhelming. We already practice RACK in our feedism dynamic, so we both understand the concepts of risk awareness, consent, and communication.
What I’m really looking for now is guidance from people who have experience in this kind of dynamic.
Specifically:
* How do Dommes find community or mentors?
* How do you structure a dynamic so it integrates with normal life (jobs, family responsibilities, etc.)?
* How do you approach “sessions” in a relationship context?
* Do subs tend to enjoy working toward rewards or milestones? For example: earning a collar, bangles, tattoos, or other symbols after completing certain goals?
* What are small, practical ways to bring a power exchange dynamic into everyday life?
Ultimately, I really admire the courage it took for him to show that level of vulnerability with me. He’s been devoted to me for almost two decades, and I want to learn how to meet that devotion with intention and skill, both for my own pleasure and to honor the trust he placed in me.

**TL;DR:**
My husband and I have been together for almost two decades and have a very loving relationship. Recently he opened up about wanting to make an unspoken Domme/sub dynamic between us more explicit—centered around devotion, service, and consensual power exchange that fits alongside our existing feedism dynamic. I’m interested in learning how to step into the Domme role thoughtfully and am looking for advice on mentorship, structuring dynamics in real life, and small ways to bring power exchange into our everyday relationship.
