The new W seems to not know what it wants.
Right now, the ability is fighting itself. It tries to be a mobility tool, a defensive shield, and a heal all at once, but the execution makes these mechanics completely cancel each other out.
From what I've seen, there are three ways you could possibly use this ability:
- Reach a target.
- Stick to the target.
- Or resist damage.
The problem arises with the "Or". The ability only allows you to choose one, but Shyvana is a character who desperately needs all of them to function properly.
If you use it to reach someone, the shield breaks before you can, or when you finally do, the duration expires. Now you can't follow your enemy, neither defend your self with the shield. It's even possible to see an example of this happening in her champion spotlight.
If you use it to stick to someone, they can deal enough damage to break the shield, instantly removing your movement speed. Now you can only stare to the enemy going away.
If you use it to resist damage, there are two common situations: dueling and team fighting.
If you are dueling and reactively uses the shield to block some damage, now you can't stick to them.
If you are team fighting, most of the time youre ulting at the center of the chaos, in this case, you WILL take all of their damage. So, if you have to use your W early, maybe to find a better angle before ulting or getting to the fight, you not only lose a lot of potential shield, but you lose everything else after.
If you use it right after ulting, your shield will pop like a balloon and since you probably used it at high health, the healing is simply garbage.
If you use it after the enemy team has used everything on you, when they have no more damage left to evaporate your shield and you have lost enough health to make the healing meaningful... Congratulations, your shield is now useless, and if you survived that, then you probably didn't even need the shield in the first place.
You are literally punished for trying to engage. You lose your gap-close because your shield did its job, and you waste your heal because you lost your gap-close. It feels incredibly clunky and unfair.
It became all about if the enemy champion has enough damage to break your shield, or you having enough endurance to survive until you can use the ability again. This has a name, it's called a "Stat Check".
To fix this, Riot needs to decouple these mechanics and give agency back to the player. The ability needs to stop playing itself.
Here is my take on how to fix the problem:
- W no longer automatically recasts itself after the shield is broken.
- Duration: 2.5s -> 4s.
- Bonus MS: 25% -> 20-30%.
- MS toward enemies: 43.75% -> 35-52.5%.
- Bonus shield per nearby enemy champion: 18-42 (+2.5% bonus HP) -> Removed (0).
- Base Shield: 60-140 (+5% bHP) -> Increased to 80-200 (+7.5% bonus HP).
- Bonus healing based on enemy champions hit: 0% -> 0-50% (healing based on missing health unchanged)
I think this fixes most of the problems without completely changing the ability's purpose or uses. I also think it's quite "Riot friendly"... maybe.
