Loving the series so far, any general suggestions/opinions for the rest of the series?

SpoilerGS Spoilers

I have been trying to pick up some solid/well-recommended SFF series that I have overlooked before. (Recently tried Robin Hobb, but quit after book 3 of Farseer, being a little disappointed), so I decided to give Red Rising a shot, and I am really pleasantly surprised by how much I like it.

I’ve been doing the audiobooks (don’t have as much time to sit down and read as I used to), and I am about halfway through book 3.

I recognize that there are some pretty common tropes/crutches (as in most SFF), but in RR I can tell that they are being used to tell a unique story with great character work in a world that feels lived-in, and has some really good prose, which are all things I really value (I’m not in it just for the action, although I really enjoy that too). The dark moments and emotional troughs in this story hit me pretty hard at times, but those are also offset by the really great/satisfying moments - IOW, the low points serve a purpose in the narrative and serve to make the payoffs that much more rewarding - so it’s not the depressing kind of grimdark (so far). Which is good.

I have a couple of questions:

  1. After a couple of quick searches (trying to avoid any spoilers), I’ve seen some people hint that later books get kind of depressingly dark. I don’t mind this terribly much, as long as it’s balanced with rewarding moments. So, I wanted to ask the community: Are those hints accurate? Do the dark times continue to be offset by the satisfying ones, or is there a point at which it just devolves into constant trauma without real payoffs? If so… … … Is there a place that I need to stop reading the series, to avoid sinking into depression? lol

  2. I’m doing the standard Audible books. I’ve noticed that there are immersive audio versions in the store but haven’t tried them. Should I? Is it worth it? (Immersive audio is something that is really easy to get wrong, and I don’t want to bother with them if they might come across as cheesy or if it…. “Cheapens” the experience. If that makes sense).

  3. I really should have looked this one up before I ever started the books (sigh), but…. Is the series finished? Is book 6 the finale of the story, or will I be left waiting for more, and hoping that yet another fantasy author doesn’t leave me hanging?

Anyway, I’m loving the series so far. And so, after diving headfirst into it… I now find myself at this weird point where I’m trying to set my expectations to avoid being inevitably disappointed (yet again), and to decide how best (and if) to continue beyond book 3.

FWIW, I’m a big fan of Wheel of Time, ASOIAF, Dungeon Crawler Carl, and Project Hail Mary, just to name a few… if that helps give an idea of what I’m into - and the kinds of things that I will happily put myself through for a good/somewhat satisfying story. :-)

Thanks for any feedback/help! And again, please, no spoilers beyond book 2 - I am about halfway through Morning Star right now; just looking for very general info about tone etc.

(Sorry for making this such a lengthy post; I didn’t mean it to be. I can be a little long-winded once I start putting my thoughts down in writing)
