Contractor will not finish the job

Contracts

Location: Huntsville, AL

A friend bought a house and the upstairs was unfinished. Her realtor suggested a contractor whom they had worked with previously. The contractor bid on the job and the money (almost $20,000) was paid for the job and a contract was written up. It was started back in August. It was supposed to be finished in December according to the contractor. It is now March and it is not close to complete.

The job was supposed to be a bathroom and bedroom built. Tub, Sink, air conditioning, ceiling fans, bathroom lights, vanity, all supplied by my friend. Since August, he has put in the wiring, put up the walls and put a little paint on them. He's had a myriad of excuses and claiming other work getting in the way.

He has not been back over since the beginning of January to do any work at all. Recently, he claimed he was waiting on another job to pay him to come finish the job, that was 2 weeks ago. Since then, he has not responded to her at all.

My friend is tired of it and is looking to go with another contractor to finish the job. This other contractor quoted $15,000 to finish the job. She tried reaching out to the other contractor again via text and he has read the messages sent, but she has not told him she's looking at getting another contractor. She has told him that at this point she would like to get at least some of her money back because he hasn't fulfilled his promise and that she is considering finishing it herself.

What options does she have at this point?
