[Next Time Spoilers] Am I the only one who thinks this upcoming matchup is incredibly boring?
I’m gonna be honest, the next time being Reze vs Bakugo is genuinely one of the most disappointing matchup reveals they could’ve gone with right now. I know some people like this matchup, and that’s fine, but the more I think about it the more it just feels like a really tired and boring choice for a episode.
First off: the matchup itself just isn’t that interesting. The core “connection” between these two characters basically boils down to the fact that they blow things up. That’s basically the entire premise. There aren’t really strong thematic parallels, ideological contrasts, or narrative dynamics that make the matchup compelling beyond that surface level similarity. When Death Battle does matchups that really hit, there’s usually something deeper tying the characters together shared themes, mirrored arcs, ideological conflicts, etc. Here it just feels like “explosion character vs explosion character,” which is about as basic as it gets.
Second: this matchup feels incredibly redundant because of how recently My Hero was already covered. This will now be the third My Hero matchup across the last season and this season, and that’s just kind of exhausting. I can excuse something like Deku and Shigaraki happening in the same general timeframe because they represent two completely different sides of the My Hero world: the hero side and the villain side. There’s a clear thematic contrast there that makes sense to explore separately.
But Bakugo? What exactly are they going to talk about with him that they didn’t already cover with Deku or Shigaraki? The power system is the same. The scaling pool is the same. The worldbuilding they’ll reference is the same. It just feels like we’re going to hear a lot of the same analysis repeated again with a slightly different character.
Honestly, My Hero probably should’ve waited another couple seasons before coming back. Let the series breathe a bit instead of stacking multiple episodes this close together.
Third: this matchup feels like it’s chasing a trend that already died down. Let’s be real about when this matchup actually became popular. It blew up when the Reze Arc movie was coming out and everyone started doing the Bakugo vs Reze slander wars online. At the time, yeah, the memes were funny and the debates were entertaining.
But that whole trend already burned itself out months ago. The conversations already happened. The jokes already ran their course. So seeing Death Battle pick it now just kind of feels like they’re jumping onto a hype train that’s already left the station.
Fourth: from a scaling perspective, this is just another stomp in what’s already shaping up to be a stomp heavy season. I’m genuinely struggling to see how this is supposed to be an interesting debate. Bakugo massively outscales Reze in multiple categories depending on how you interpret the feats and scaling chains from My Hero. The only real question here isn’t who winsit’s how badly Bakugo wins.
And that’s just not very compelling from a versus debate standpoint. If the outcome feels that obvious, then the analysis part of the episode isn’t going to have much tension.
Fifth: it’s honestly disappointing that Reze is the Chainsaw Man rep they went with. Reze is a cool character, but if we’re being honest there are so many more interesting characters from Chainsaw Man they could’ve used. We already had Makima represent the series once, and now we’re getting another villain rep with Reze.
Meanwhile characters like Denji, Power, or Aki any of those three would’ve been way more interesting to see analyzed and matched up with someone.
And realistically, we’re probably not getting another Chainsaw Man episode this season, which makes it even more disappointing that this is the matchup they chose.
Sixth: there are just better matchups for both characters. If they really wanted to do Bakugo, there are plenty of other explosive or aggressive characters that could’ve created more interesting dynamics. The same goes for Reze. This matchup just feels like the most obvious and surface level pairing they could’ve gone with, rather than something that actually explores either character in a new way.
It honestly just comes across as a matchup that exists because the characters share one flashy ability, not because their stories or themes meaningfully interact.
Seventh: Death Battle has basically already covered this matchup before, and that makes it even less exciting. Another thing that really kills the hype for me is the fact that Death Battle has already talked about this matchup on their Cast, and the way that discussion went honestly doesn’t give me much hope for the episode being interesting. During that cast, the entire conversation basically turned into them acknowledging that Reze doesn’t really have a chance here. It got to the point where the person who was originally arguing on Reze’s side literally switched sides at the beginning of it because the gap between them was that obvious. When even the person defending a character gives up on the argument, that kind of says everything about how the debate is going to go.
That’s part of why this episode feels so disappointing. It already feels like the analysis is going to be extremely one sided, and if they follow the same reasoning they brought up in the cast, a lot of the episode will probably just be explaining why Reze loses so badly.
And that’s not a very compelling setup for a Death Battle. The fun of these episodes usually comes from seeing how the research team breaks down a close or interesting matchup. But when the discussion is already leaning toward “this character has basically zero chance,” it just makes the entire thing feel predictable before the episode even comes out
Final thoughts: I know some people are going to say I’m looking at this matchup in the worst possible light, and maybe I am, but from where I’m standing this just feels like a really tired choice. Between the redundancy of another My Hero episode, the already-expired meme debate surrounding the matchup, and the fact that it’s probably a stomp, it just doesn’t seem like a particularly exciting Death Battle.
The only thing that’s probably going to carry this episode is the animation and the fight choreography. And to be fair, that could still end up being cool. But from a matchup and analysis perspective, this just feels like one of the most boring choices they could’ve made for both characters.
Also if Reze wins it will be incredibly funny
