Struggling with discipline and career direction in final year β€” need real advice, not motivation quotes

πŸ€” NeedAdvice

So I'm a final-year IT student in India and honestly I'm just going to be straight about where I'm at because I'm tired of sugarcoating it to myself. My situation is this β€” I have a cybersecurity internship going on, I'm also preparing for government exams (IB ACIO, SSC), and somewhere in the back of my head I keep wondering if I should just drop all that and go full corporate tech instead. So my attention is basically split three ways and none of them are getting my full effort. But here's the thing β€” the career confusion isn't even the main problem. The main problem is me. I'll plan out a productive day the night before, wake up, and then just... not do it. I get pulled into my phone, scrolling, bad habits, and before I know it half the day is gone. Then the guilt kicks in, and weirdly the guilt makes it worse β€” like I feel so bad about wasting the morning that I can't bring myself to start in the afternoon either. It's a stupid cycle and I know it's stupid, which somehow makes it more frustrating. And something I've been thinking about lately β€” I don't know exactly when it happened, but the will to study just kind of died somewhere after 10th. Back then I used to study out of pure fear. Fear of failing, fear of not making it, and that fear actually worked β€” it kept me focused and I got decent marks. But after 10th that fear faded, and I realized I never actually built any real love for studying or learning. It was always just fear driving me. And now without it, I just feel nothing when I sit down to open a book or start a topic. Not laziness exactly, just... emptiness. Like the engine that used to run me burned out and I never found a replacement for it. And I see people around me who seem to have it figured out β€” they have a clear goal, a clear path, and they're just executing. I don't have that. I don't even know what I deeply want. Like I have reasons to work hard, I have pressure, I have responsibilities β€” but I don't have that one thing I'm working toward that feels certain. Most people seem to have goals. I'm still trying to figure out what mine actually is, not just what sounds responsible to say out loud. The reason I actually care about fixing this isn't just career stuff. My parents are getting older, they've worked hard their whole lives, and I want to become financially stable fast enough to actually take some of that weight off them. That thought genuinely hurts me when I'm wasting time. But even that hasn't been enough to make me consistent, which tells me the problem is deeper than motivation. So I'm not here for "just believe in yourself" type responses. I want to know: If you were stuck in this guilt and avoidance loop, what actually broke it for you? How did you pick a direction when multiple paths seemed valid? What routines or systems actually held up for you long term, not just the first week? If you also went through a phase where you didn't even know what you wanted β€” how did you figure it out? And if you lost the will to study at some point and felt nothing when you tried β€” how did you get it back? If you've been through something like this I'd really appreciate hearing what worked. Not what should work in theory β€” what actually worked for you.
