Am I overthinking safety for a family trip to NYC right now?

My wife and I are very experienced travelers (we’ve visited 20+ countries and taken over 40 flights together). However, this is our first major intercontinental trip with our almost 3-year-old son. We are flying from Europe to JFK at the end of April, with a layover in Oslo. Here is my dilemma: Money is not the issue. If we need to cancel the trip and lose the deposit/tickets, we will gladly do it. My absolute priority is peace of mind. Lately, the global news has me doomscrolling. With the current geopolitical tensions (Middle East), reports of a minor explosive device near the US embassy in Oslo where we layover, and news about political protests in Manhattan, my dad-instincts are in overdrive. I know that social media algorithms push apocalyptic headlines for clicks, and I know intellectually that Manhattan has a massive police presence. But my fear is that we will go there and I won't be able to relax. I just want to walk around Central Park, visit museums, and push the stroller without constantly looking over my shoulder or worrying about random events. So, I need a reality check from locals and frequent flyers: Locals in NYC: How is the vibe on the ground in Manhattan right now? Are things completely normal in the tourist areas, or is the tension actually palpable? Travelers: Am I letting the news cycle ruin what should be a great family vacation? Any honest advice is appreciated. I don't want to cancel out of irrational fear, but I also don't want to go if I can't actually enjoy it.
