I finally escaped CVS pharmacy purgatory and it only took multiple transfer attempts and a customer service intervention
I would like to report that after several weeks of increasingly confusing interactions with CVS Pharmacy, I have successfully transferred three prescriptions to Amazon Pharmacy.
This should have been a routine pharmacy transfer. Instead it became a side quest.
The saga started when CVS refused to fill one of my prescriptions because there was “no insurance coverage.” We do not have prescription coverage. I told them I was happy to pay cash. Apparently the concept of exchanging money for goods and services was controversial.
No one suggested a cash fill. No one mentioned discount programs. Just a firm “can’t fill it.”
Then came the spacer incident.
My child was prescribed a spacer for an inhaler. The pharmacy refused to dispense it because they believed it was expired.
The reason? They read the manufacture date on the packaging as an expiration date.
At this point my confidence in the system began to… erode.
So I decided to transfer all prescriptions out. Amazon initiated the transfer request. CVS did not respond. Eventually the request was cancelled.
I tried again.
Same outcome.
Finally I called Amazon Pharmacy customer service and explained that CVS seemed to be ignoring the transfer requests. The very patient representative had the correct department contact CVS directly to initiate the transfer.
After multiple attempts, the prescriptions were finally released.
One of them is a SSRI, which makes the whole “we’ll just ignore transfer requests and see what happens” strategy feel particularly concerning.
Anyway, the prescriptions are now free and living their best life at Amazon.
Lessons learned: • Cash prescriptions are apparently a mystery to some pharmacies • Manufacture dates are not expiration dates • Sometimes you must escalate like it’s a corporate boss battle
Healthcare access should not feel like a puzzle dungeon, but here we are.
If anyone else is currently stuck in a pharmacy transfer standoff, I wish you strength, patience, and a good customer service representative.
