I struggled with IBS for 10+ years and finally beat it, here's what actually helped me
Note: Posting this again as the previous one was removed for "self-promotion" reason. Self promoting a FREE book to help people, seriously??? So here it goes, without the ebook sharing, please do not ask for it in the comments etc because it is getting ridiculous I will not post this for the 3rd time. You can ask me anything though I will continue answering to best of my knowledge.
BEFORE YOU READ I WANT TO SAY THIS FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART: THERE IS HOPE, DO NOT GIVE UP!
The Original Post (Redacted)
Hey everyone. I want to share something personal that I've never really talked about openly, and I hope it helps at least one person here.
For 10 years, my life was ruled by IBS. My main symptoms were constant diarrhea, gas, and loud gurgling sounds that made any quiet social situation an absolute nightmare. I'm talking about sitting in a cinema during a silent scene, heart pounding, praying my stomach wouldn't announce itself to the entire room. Every class I sat in. Then every work meeting. The anxiety on top of the physical symptoms made everything so much worse.
I visited doctors so many times that I lost count. I did 2 endoscopies, 1 colonoscopy, everything came back "fine." I was prescribed antidepressants, probiotics, antibiotics. Nothing really worked. At some point I genuinely thought it would be better to not be here anymore than to keep living like this. I felt broken. Like everyone else was just normal, and I was somehow less than them.
I want to be clear, I'm not a doctor. I'm just someone who suffered for a long time and eventually started educating myself out of desperation and possibly depression. Please take everything I say with a grain of salt, because IBS is incredibly individual and what worked for me might not work for you.
But here's what eventually turned things around for me. Diet was the first big thing. I started eliminating specific foods, dairy being the biggest culprit. I still cringe remembering drinking a full glass of milk the night before class thinking it would somehow help. I was basically pouring gasoline on a fire. Sigh...
I also tried a ton of different probiotics, from fancy brands to basic ones, and it took time to figure out what worked. Surprise surprise: it is not the fancy brands :) Vitamin D and L-glutamine became daily supplements. I started eating more fermented foods like pickles, kefir (lactose-free) and yogurt(lactose-free) regularly. Working out made a bigger difference than I expected too.
And a weird one, I stopped drinking tap water at home. I genuinely think the water quality was making things worse. Switched to store bought and noticed a real difference.
None of this happened overnight, and none of it helped alone by itself. It was gradual, fewer bad days, less frequency, less intensity, and I kept going because I could finally see some progress. After 10 years I can honestly say I'm free from it.
The reason I wrote a book about this is a close friend of mine mentioned his sister was going through the same thing and asked if I had any tips. I texted him -for pages :D- and at that moment I realized I had accumulated so much knowledge just from living through it and it felt wrong to keep it to myself.
If you're suffering, please know it is possible to not just manage IBS but actually beat it. Your journey might look totally different from mine, but don't give up.
Happy to answer any questions to the best of my non-medical knowledge. And if you're in the thick of it right now, I see you. It gets better!
