Russian capture K98 - cleaning off remaining cosmoline residue from stock?

I have an RC K98 that I bought years and years ago. I gave it a pretty good cleaning back then, but the laminate stock still seems to have a layer of cosmoline residue left behind. It doesn't "ooze" out of the wood anymore, but the stock definitely still has that distinct odor, and if you handle the gun, your hands immediately get greasy and smelly.

I now want to try to clean off the rest of the gunk, but I want to leave the original (shellac I guess) finish intact. Any ideas? I'm big into leaving the gun in original condition, I just don't want my hands to reek every time I touch it.

I recently tried to wipe down the upper handguard with dawn dish soap/water and a rag. It definitely got some brown gunk off, but it left the wood a little "dull" - like I had stripped off some finish accidentally.

Any other tips/ideas/products I could try that will clean off the rest of the grease but otherwise leave the finish and wood untouched?
