Rosemary tips for zone 7

Anyone in Maryland have success with rosemary outdoors? For about 5 years, I had a thriving rosemary - was giving it away in bunches to the neighbors. Then that one died, and I haven't been able to sustain one since. Have tried a couple of different spots in the garden with no luck. Thinking of trying an Arb variety?

Possibly (probably) relevant: I am a lackadaisical gardener. After getting it in the ground, it can expect water when it's dry out, but not much more in terms of hands-on care. I will look at it thoughtfully once in a while, and pinch a leaf to smell as if I know what I'm doing.
