Welcome to r/speclan — what this sub is for and where things stand

Hey — I'm Thomas, I built SPECLAN. This is the official subreddit for it.

## What SPECLAN is

A free VS Code extension for managing specifications as Markdown files in Git. You organize requirements in a tree (goals → features → requirements), each entity is a Markdown file with YAML frontmatter, and the extension gives you a tree view, a WYSIWYG editor, AI-assisted spec writing, and a status lifecycle that controls who can edit what.

The core idea: structure your specs like you structure your code. One file per entity, meaningful hierarchy, version-controlled, diffable, branchable.

There's also a Claude Code plugin that lets AI agents read and write specs through slash commands.

## Where things stand

SPECLAN is a side project. I've been building it for about 6 months. It works — I use it daily on a real project — but it's not polished everywhere. Some things are rough, some features are half-baked, and the docs could be better. I'd rather ship and iterate than wait for perfect.

Current state:

- VS Code extension on the Marketplace (free)

- Claude Code plugin (free, open source)

- Website at speclan.net with online help

- BMAD-METHOD integration (bidirectional import/export)

- 7-minute walkthrough video on YouTube

## What belongs here

- **Questions** — about SPECLAN, the file format, workflows, anything

- **Feature requests** — describe the problem you're solving, not just the feature you want

- **Bug reports** — include your extension version and steps to reproduce

- **Show & tell** — your spec trees, templates, integrations, Claude Code workflows

- **Discussion** — spec-driven development, requirements engineering, docs-as-code, how AI changes the game

- **Feedback** — what works, what doesn't, what's confusing

## What doesn't belong here

- Unrelated self-promotion

- Low-effort AI-generated content
