Are tongue movements an indicator of early cognitive decline?

Physician Responded

44 year old female, 5'6", 155 lbs, no major medical issues, but I deal with depression and PMS/PMDD symptoms and trichotillomania. I sleep well, eat well enough, maintain a full time job, not getting any exercise currently.

Hello...I'm currently wondering about some things that I fear may be related to cognitive decline, but the one thing that has confused me the most is little tongue movements that I never used to do.

I have caught myself, usually while concentrating on something, moving my tongue back and forth gently, with my jaw slightly slackened (but mouth still shut). It's just a mindless movement I notice happening sometimes.

Then, today, I was focusing on my computer and noticed myself chew/gently bite down once on my tongue, which was twisted sideways a bit. I noticed right away but was taken aback because this is not an action I've ever noticed myself do before today, and I felt kind of dumb doing it, and it reminded me of something I would imagine an elderly person would do.

Over the past year, I've had some concerns with my memory, which I've attributed to an unusually stressful period over the past 2 years, aging, and I also fell and might have had a very mild concussion (headache and sleepy the next day).

After reading about cognitive decline, I'm also a bit concerned because I've generally found it harder to remember words, less interest/energy in planning and preparing meals (opting for very easy things more often), less social.

I'm just wondering if the absentminded tongue thing is an indicator of anything, and if I should be tested again. I had a memory test and scored average (ie. within normal range), except for in the recall section, where I scored 2/5 (where you repeat a list of 5 words after being distracted for a short period).

I've been a somewhat sad/depressed person my whole life, so I'm not sure I'd attribute this stuff to depression. It feels new/different.

Thank you.
