I unfortunately am not at all passionate about my job. I do have fun passions like music and fashion and photography and plants, but one thing I do feel fiercely about is weight lifting. I lifted when I was in my early 20s and bartending (and too hard headed to ask the kitchen for help every time I needed to change a keg😂).

Then life life’d for a while and I put myself at the bottom of my priority list. Then I had some scary surgeries and needed to feel like I had a little control back and I found myself in the gym again. That was almost six years ago and I haven’t looked back.

I love lifting for so many reasons. It has helped me be comfortable with my body. It keeps my brain happy. It’s just me against me. But also it helps libido and for women over 40 it’s especially important for things like bone density.

Last season on the soccer sidelines, one of the moms lamented that she would work out more but she didn’t want to bulk up. I looked over her to a fellow lifter mom who was standing on her other side and we had a good eye roll on that one. I hate that way of thinking. (Natural) lifting won’t make you look like anything close to the gym bros in my 6am crew. But also: strong is beautiful. And feminine. Taking up your space in all the ways is beautiful and feminine. Don’t let some weird misogynistic mindset make you think you need to be smaller in any sense to make yourself appealing. That’s what I roar about.
