Westjet's handling of the Puerto Vallarta extended stay compensation
Curious how others affected by the recent WestJet cancellations in Puerto Vallarta are dealing with compensation and whether anyone has looked into Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR) obligations.
Our situation:
- We were scheduled to depart Feb 22 from Puerto Vallarta on a WestJet flight booked through Expedia.
- WestJet cancelled the flight due to the situation in the area.
- Initially we received communication saying not to worry and that they were working on securing a new flight for us.
- After that, there was essentially radio silence.
- Eventually we were told we needed to book flights ourselves, and the earliest option we could find was the following Sunday, nearly a week later.
Because of that delay we had to cover multiple extra nights of accommodation and all our meals while waiting for a flight home.
WestJet did send an email stating that “reasonable accommodation expenses will be reviewed.” But it didn’t mention food or other costs, which seems odd given the circumstances.
What’s also confusing is that under Canada’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR), airlines are typically responsible for rebooking passengers and providing standards of treatment (food, hotel, etc.) during delays, even when disruptions are outside their control. In our case, WestJet didn’t rebook us and we had to arrange everything ourselves.
So I’m curious what others experienced:
- Did WestJet actually rebook anyone, or did most people have to arrange flights themselves?
- Has anyone started the reimbursement process yet, and what are they expecting to be covered? I'm worried that booking through Expedia complicates things
Honestly pretty disappointed in how this was handled. The initial message suggested WestJet would manage the rebooking, but it ended up feeling like we were largely left to sort it out ourselves while stranded.
Would appreciate hearing how others are approaching it.
