What are some interesting things on your "to-grow" list?
Anything new you're adding this year / next season? Here's some of the newbies I've decided to add to my garden and why! Not all of them are going to be winners but I'm damn sure interested in trying it. Be warned I'm a berry lover at heart. If it's a berry, it's likely on my list.
-
Strawberry spinach : 2 harvests in one! Even if the berries aren't the most flavorful I still want to try them out. They only take 50-60 days to grow. If I don't like them, the birds can have them.
-
Amaranth (love lies bleeding): looks cool and is an indigenous grain iirc. So I'm planting plenty since it's such a quick grower
-
Currant tomato : itty bitty tomatoes. I'm not a huge tomato fan but these look cute and I wanna try to make sauce with them or give them to friends
-
Garden Huckleberry : Big producer and quick grower. The unripe berries are toxic but when ripe they're cooked down usually in jams ? So it's apparently like a blueberry-blackberry taste. I want to try them. If they're yummy I can use them to make jammy bars
-
Blackberry huckleberry: Same as the above but many people said they eat them fresh. They're supposed to be similar to blackberries in taste and the plant is 2-3ft high.
-
Ground Cherries: They seem like a vigorous grower with lots of fruit. I'm interested in if I'll enjoy the taste.
-
White Alpine strawberry: SUPER tiny white alpine berries but they could make a good ground cover and understory. Birds leave em alone because they're white.
-
PawPaw : native fruit tree related to the custard apple. Supposed to taste tropical.
-
Juneberry and Honey berry : it's berries and i want them, they seem yummy. So I'm gonna plant them.
*Salmon berry : PRETTY.
-
Groundnut: the flowers are pretty and the edible tubers are a big bonus for me
-
Birdhouse Gourd: to make lots of cool stuff out of. Including birdhouse.
-
Yellow pear tomato : theyre cute and look like pears. Good enough for me.
*Bok choy : I already eat tons of this so might as well grow it
*Black nebula carrot : theyre purple and yellow !!! Fuck yeah
-
Snack pepper : i eat tons of these but havent grown them before. so time to try
-
Papaya : way shorter time from seed to harvest than expected. For a tree? Super fast grower.
