Need advice. Love my BC and don’t want to switch but having issues with breakthrough bleeding.
Hi! I am 24 years old and I’ve been taking Marvelon 28 for about 8 years. After a few years of taking it continuously to skip periods, I started to have issues with spotting and my doctor switched my BC a couple times. None of the pills she switched me to were a good fit. I ended up taking a complete break from birth control and didn’t take anything for 6 months. Then, my acne was becoming a problem again so my doctor let me go back on Marvelon 5 years ago. I have been on Marvelon since then.
Now I’ve been having issues with spotting/breakthrough bleeding again. It’s been happening for a while and I just try and ignore it, but it’s becoming so annoying. As of a few months ago, I stopped taking them continuously and took a 7 day break at the end of each pack. But I’m noticing that I’m still having spotting before the end of the pack. Probably a week before the end of pack, I’m spotting. Nothing heavy, but enough where I have to wear a panty liner. It’s usually this dark brown looking discharge which i understand is old blood, but it feels like I’m having this for half of my pack.
I had an appointment with my doctor last week and she suggested switching to Yaz. I really don’t want to switch. I love Marvelon. I have zero side effects besides the spotting. My mood is good, I have energy, clear skin, I’m able to control my weight, etc. This is the only birth control I have tried where I feel like myself. Also, Yaz is a higher risk pill for blood clots/stroke and the class action lawsuit against it kinda scares me. BC already has those risks, but Yaz is even worse. My doctor reassured me that those risks are still technically ‘rare’, but it still freaks me out. I just wish I could stay on this one. I have also thought about taking another break from the pill, as I havent been sexually active in months. But then my face gets all irritated, and the periods suck. I don’t know what to do. Has anyone else been in a similar predicament? What do you recommend?
