Launched my 3D data visualizer this week. Got my first 129 visitors (yay!) but an 82% bounce rate. I think the WebGL is melting mobile phones. Roast my performance?
Hey r/SideProject,
I’ve been building HeatGlobe, a 3D interactive globe that takes boring 2D datasets (population, climate, trade) and turns them into aesthetic, interactive WebGL visualizations.
I’ve gotten a little bit of early traction from Twitter and Reddit (129 visitors in the last few days!), but I was looking at my Vercel analytics today and noticed a massive problem: my bounce rate is 82%.
Looking deeper, 43% of my traffic is from mobile users. My running theory right now is that the 3D canvas (built with Next.js, React, and Three.js) is just way too heavy for older phones to render quickly, or the "time-to-wow" is too slow so people immediately close the tab.
I've tried implementing progressive degradation and reducing poly-counts for mobile viewports, but I'm flying blind without enough device testing.
If you have a moment, I would genuinely appreciate some brutal feedback:
- Load Time: How long does the initial 3D globe take to render for you?
- Device Handling: Does it completely drop frames on your phone? Spin up your laptop fans?
- UX: When you land on the page, is it obvious how to interact with the data?
You can break it here: https://www.heatglobe.com
Thanks in advance for the roasts and the feedback. Happy to answer any questions about the 3D/WebGL implementation!
