Sony Mini DV on Canon - head alignment standards?

I got a Canon HV10 to transfer Sony Mini DV tapes (DCR-PC1). Both set to standard DV, but the Sony tapes play choppy on the Canon and the sound drops out, and vice-versa. They each play their own recordings fine, so it's not a dirty head issue. Could there be a deviation from the standard specs for Mini DV across brands?
