Day 36 of Building a Global Gem Trade Platform — Domains Secured, Allnighter Started, and the Industry Told Me Everything Without Saying a Word 💎

A blockchain-based gem traceability platform launched in 2024. Partnerships with major mining houses. Tens of millions of stones recorded. Not a single colleague in the gem trade mentioned it to me. Ever.

That told me everything I needed to know about who this industry is actually built for. And who it isn't.

HACKS / WORKAROUNDS FOR YOU

1. Check if your recovered PDFs are actually readable: PhotoRec recovers files but doesn't check if they're healthy. I had 775 PDFs — some fully intact, some corrupted shells. Built a Python health checker using pymupdf that opens every file, tries to read the first 3 pages, and sorts them into three folders automatically:

healthy_pdfs/   → fully readable
damaged_pdfs/   → partial content
empty_pdfs/     → no text at all

Now I only search through confirmed healthy files. No more hanging terminals. No more MuPDF errors flooding the screen.

2. Build a personal search engine for your documents: Once you have healthy PDFs — build a keyword searcher. Type "silk inclusions" and it finds every PDF containing that term, shows the page number, shows the snippet, and opens the file if you want. Your entire document library becomes instantly searchable. pymupdf + 50 lines of Python. That's it.

3. Domain email without paying for hosting: Porkbun includes free email forwarding with every domain. hello@yourdomain-com forwards straight to your existing Gmail. Zero setup. Already there in your dashboard. Nobody needs to know it's forwarded. Looks completely professional.--- found this is legit after the tiring zoho ritual... But if you need ZOHO- just message me i will give the url which will take you to the forever free version(does come with few tradeoffs)

4. Animated gradient backgrounds — one CSS trick:

No libraries. No JavaScript. Pure CSS. The background breathes like a living thing. Royal blue shifting to obsidian shifting to dark emerald. Subtle enough to feel premium, alive enough to feel different.

TODAY'S WORK

Started the day discovering that a well-funded, well-partnered blockchain gem platform had been operating since 2024 with zero penetration into the actual gem trade community I'm part of. The people who should be using it — rough dealers, cutters, small labs — have never heard of it.

Then I understood. It was built for the top of the pyramid. Enterprise partnerships. Mining conglomerates. The bottom of the pyramid — the Ratnapura dealer, the independent cutter, the small certification lab — was never the target.

That's my target. That's always been my target. Moving on.

Then I built things.

GemTrace v2.0 shipped. From scratch in one session — a self-contained canvas animation engine in vanilla JS. Real world map with Mercator projection. Six geometric crystal structures for rough gem origins. Six polished cut outlines with rotation. Snake line traceability arcs. Blockchain hop visualization. Sri Lanka radar sweep from Colombo. It's running live.

Then the PDF tools. Health checker first — sorted 775 recovered files in minutes. Then the search engine — my entire gemology library searchable in seconds. Typed "investment" and watched it find files I thought were gone forever.

Then the domains. manikvault.com and tracegems.com — both secured today for $22.16 total.

manikvault will be the marketplace. Where verified dealers list stones. Where buyers find certified gems with full traceability.

tracegems is the public trust layer. Anyone — buyer in Tokyo, dealer in Dubai, collector in New York — can type a stone ID and see its full journey. Mine to cutter to lab to market. No login. No fee. Just transparency.

LOOK BACK — the honest part

Day 1 I was fighting CSS margins.

Day 36 I own two domains, have a live animated world map engine, a searchable gemology library(will be in 2 weeks), a Telegram bot hunting domain names while I sleep, and a clearer vision than I've ever had.

The competitor I saw this morning didn't make me anxious. It made me focused.

They built for the boardroom. I'm building for the people who actually touch the stones.

The gem trade is one of the oldest industries in the world. It runs on trust, relationships, and reputation. Nobody has digitized that properly because nobody who understood it technically was also inside it.

I'm inside it. I'm a gemologist from Rathnapura -first. The code came second.

That's the moat nobody can buy.
