AITAH for calling him pathetic for getting mad about a woman right video?
Today I (female) watched a news video about woman rights in the Netherlands. My partner (male) joined in for a bit.
Part of the video discusses the gender pay gap in the Netherlands for the same work. My partner kept interrupting, repeatedly claiming that freelance women earn more for the same work than freelance men.
I got a little irritated because I just wanted to watch the video, so I hit pause. I tried to explain that, on average, women earn less than men, and that it's possible that women are somewhat more fortunate somewhere along the spectrum, but that, on average, men earn more than women for the same work and the same hours, especially if the woman has children.
I say "trying," because he kept interrupting me.
I asked why he kept interrupting me, but he said I was using it to avoid having to respond to factual information.
I tried to say that I understood his defensiveness because the video wasn't very positive about men during the women's revolution, but that men simply hadn't behaved wonderfully towards women in the past, and that there still isn't full equality.
I say again, I tried. Because I couldn't finish speaking again, as he had already interrupted me 20 times...
I told him it was pathetic to keep reacting like that, and he sneered that I should just finish the video and stormed out of the house.
I'm sitting here, mostly surprised... maybe I went too far by saying he was pathetic... but why such a strong reaction to a news video about women's rights?
