Beginner thinking about buying a Fender Ultra II — worth it or overkill?
Amateur/beginner player here. I’ve had a 2007 Squier Strat Affinity for years. I originally picked it up used a long time ago, and it mostly sat in my closet, but over the last year, I’ve started picking it up again and actually trying to learn.
I’m a dad now, and my 16-month-old son loves sitting and listening while I mess around, which has honestly been a big motivation to keep playing. It’s also been a great way to unwind and give my brain a break from the day-to-day chaos of life.
Because of that, I’m thinking about finally buying a nicer guitar—something I won’t feel the need to upgrade from down the road. I recently tried a friend’s Fender American Pro II Telecaster, and it sounded great, but the Deep C neck felt a little chunky for me, and my short/stubby pinky had a hard time with some stretches.
I’ve always liked Fender and would love to eventually own an American-made one. The Ultra II has caught my attention. I have pretty fat fingers, so the 25.5" scale and the 10–14" compound radius seem appealing, and the slightly slimmer neck profile sounds like it might suit me better.
For what I play (rock, grunge, pop, some country), I’m leaning toward the Ultra II HSS for versatility. Also, the Noble Blue finish just looks incredible to me.
My main question: Is the Ultra II worth it, especially for someone at my level? And would it be silly to buy one without playing it first? I live in a pretty rural area, and the only guitar shop near me is a small mom-and-pop place that mostly carries older vintage stuff.
