TTK needs an adjustment

:M2026:Marathon (2026) Discussion

First off, I'm having a blast with the game and I think the difficulty is fantastic. Every match has to be played carefully, and mistakes are punished.

What I'm not a fan of so far is the TTK, for the following reasons:

Marathon apparently wants to be a game that adds depth through the abilities of its runners. Think of it as the "Apex Legends" of extraction shooters. But for the game to truly shine with its runners and abilities, the TTK needs to be higher. The longer the gunfight lasts, the more you can utilize your runner's skills and demonstrate how well you've mastered them.

If the TTK is too short, new players will be discouraged. The game already occupies a niche and should give beginners a chance to react when they're standing with their back to the door or looting. Even I, as an experienced FPS player, sometimes have no chance to react when someone is sitting invisibly in a corner (with a gray shield, of course). Now, one could argue that the TTK increases with better shields. However, if the weapons also become better and more lethal, this essentially negates the benefit of the better shields. In my opinion, green shields should be the base shield.

So far, I've spent more time in gunfights against NPCs than against real players. I actually enjoy playing against real players to learn the weapons and improve my gunplay, but so far it feels like whoever shoots first wins. In my opinion, skill is shown when someone can maintain consistent aim for a longer period, rather than sitting in the corner and shooting first. Sometimes it feels like I'm playing a Call of Duty multiplayer match (even with green shields). In a game where you only have one life, which is already incredibly difficult, the TTK shouldn't be so incredibly low.

What do you think? Are you satisfied with the TTK? It's the only thing I've found fault with in the game so far, and it could be fixed with a small adjustment to the shields.
