Simplicity card - Deceptive. Can this be converted into lawsuit against Citi ?
I applied for this account specifically to utilize the 0% APR balance transfer offer. However, since opening the account, I have been subjected to inconsistent and contradictory information from Citi customer support that constitutes deceptive marketing practices.
The Timeline of Events:
Pre-Opening: The promotional materials did not explicitly state that balance transfers were restricted solely to creditors or loans and excluded direct deposits to checking accounts.
Initial Confirmation: Immediately after opening the account, I called customer service to verify the transfer process. I was explicitly told that while the first transfer must be to a lender/creditor, all subsequent transfers could be made to my personal checking account.
Post-Card Activation: After receiving my physical card, I attempted to follow these instructions. When the option remained unavailable, I contacted support again. I was then told that checking account transfers are "not applicable to new account holders."
Regulatory Concerns:
The Citi Simplicity offer is marketed specifically to new cardmembers. To claim a feature is unavailable to new cardmembers—after inducing them to apply based on that feature—is a clear violation of UDAAP standards. Changing terms post-enrollment and providing conflicting verbal agreements is a deceptive practice that has caused me direct financial frustration and an unnecessary hard inquiry on my credit report, not to mention the never ending calls with Citi customer and trauma this entire process is creating.
