A sweeping survey traces a turning point in public perception of unidentified phenomena—from WWII-era foo fighters and 1950s flying saucers through J. Allan Hynek’s taxonomy and Project Blue Book, the Robertson Panel’s push to keep the issue off the public stage, and decades of distrust to an active underground UFO culture—highlighting the invisible college of Jacques Vallee and Diana Walsh Pasulka aided by investigative journalism like Leslie Kean; it notes Kean’s pivotal 2017 New York Times article and the 2023 Debrief piece with David Grusch, which together argue for a long-running U.S. program to study and reverse-engineer non-human technologies, discusses the Schumer Amendment as a blueprint for public oversight and a Controlled Disclosure Plan (even as it falls short on eminent domain, a formal UAP board, and a concrete disclosure timetable), flags ontological shock as a real risk even as Pew finds many Americans are open to non-human intelligences, surveys competing explanations—from extraterrestrials to intra-terrestrials, interdimensional beings, angels or demons—and cites Jeffrey Kripal’s psychic-social dynamic rooted in Paul Tillich and John Mack, and ends with a vision of more open discourse among academia, humanities, the military, and media through conferences and channels like the Sol Foundation to guide thoughtful, discerning disclosure rather than credulity.
