2nd year law student drowning under two big essays + mental health spiral – advice needed urgently

study / academia discussion

I’m a 2nd year Law with Politics student and I have two 2,250–2,500 word essays due on 23rd and 24th March (one Public Law, one Comparative Politics). I haven’t even started the research for either because I’ve been in a really bad mental health spiral for the last six months. I’m dealing with severe depression, basically no sleep (0–6 hours a night max), I’m not eating properly, and I’ve stopped taking proper care of myself. I also have a history of self-harm and suicide attempts that nobody knows about from years prior. On top of that I’m epileptic and I’ve accidentally missed quite a few doses of my twice-daily medication recently, which is making everything worse.

I’m trying to get started this week — I’ve planned to watch the relevant Moodle videos, do the reading, and start writing — and I know I’m capable because I finished first year with a first overall. But this year has just broken me. The problem is my parents think I’ve basically finished both essays already. They’re coming to pick me up on Saturday 21st March and they’re very strict; once I’m home they monitor everything and I won’t have any real time to work. So I have to have both essays completely finished and submitted by the 21st.

On top of all this:

- My parents are constantly pressuring me to go to social events and use Find My iPhone to check where I am. If I’m not out they get angry and force me to attend socials I don’t like doing.

- I rushed a previous essay and got a C- (my lowest ever grade) plus a poor academic practice flag. I’m terrified to tell them because I know there will be shouting and it’ll get very toxic towards me at home

- I still have a full timetable of classes and seminars this week, plus 20+ minute bus commutes each way.

I’m exhausted, can’t focus, and feel crippling guilt about all of it. I just need both essays done in the next 11 days while barely functioning.

Does anyone have realistic advice? How do I actually get started when my brain feels like mush? Any study techniques, time-management tricks, or ways to explain things to strict parents that have worked for you? I’m open to anything at this point.

Thanks so much in advance. I can answer questions in the comments if anything’s unclear.
