2 weeks in Turkey: Patristic and apostolic Sites. Am I missing anything?
Hi guys happy to be here! I only recently discovered this sub
I am planning a 2 week trip to Turkey specifically to visit sites associated with the Church Fathers and the early Apostolic era. As an Roman Catholic I really want to focus on the roots of our theology and liturgy and explore more of the Church Fathers heritage.
Here is my current list:
- Cappadocia : I'm planning on the Göreme Open Air Museum and the Underground Cities (Derinkuyu/Kaymakli). I want to see the rock-cut churches where St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory of Nyssa, and St. Gregory Nazianzen lived and taught.
- Ephesus & Izmir: The House of the Virgin Mary, the Basilica of St. John, and the Church of Mary. I also want to visit St. Polycarp Church in Izmir since he was a direct disciple of St. John.
- Nicaea: I want to visit the Hagia Sophia in İznik, the site of the First Council of Nicaea
- Antioch: St. Peter’s Cave Church and the see of St. Ignatius of Antioch, who first used the term "Catholic Church."
My questions for you all:
-
Am I missing any major sites related to the Church Fathers or early councils that are cool to visit?
-
Logistics: Are there any active Eastern Catholic (Chaldean, Syriac, etc.) in these areas that a Roman Catholic could attend?
I would appreciate any advice, thank you God Bless and I pray for you all!
