The Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs — Louisville’s Historic Race

One of the things Louisville is most famous for is the Kentucky Derby.

The race has been held at Churchill Downs since 1875 and is often called the “Run for the Roses” or the “Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports.” It’s the first race in the Triple Crown and one of the longest-running sporting traditions in the United States.

I added a page about the Derby to my LouisvillePlaces project where I’m organizing things Louisville is known for.

You can check it out here: https://louisvilleplaces.neocities.org/derby

The page covers: • The history of the Kentucky Derby • Churchill Downs and why it became famous • Traditions like the roses and Derby culture • Why the Derby is such a big part of Louisville’s identity

This site is an ongoing project where I’m building a simple guide to Louisville — including art shows, famous people from the city, films shot here, and local attractions.

If you know interesting Derby facts, local history, or other Louisville places that should be included, feel free to share them.
