38M planning early retirement in India in ~5 years – looking for strategy to maximize retirement income
Hi everyone,
I’m a 38M currently based in London planning for early retirement (well, I plan to quit my job here and work part time on a family business) in India around age 43 and would love some input from this community on strategy and portfolio optimization.
Current Financial Situation
Assets:
- Gold: ₹1 Cr
- Liquid investments (FDs / cash equivalents): ₹2 Cr
- Equity (stocks / MF/ equity funds): ₹1 Cr
Total invested assets: ~₹4 Cr
Other assets:
- Ancestral home (no housing expense expected)
- ~5 acres of farmland (not currently generating significant income)
Future savings:
- Expecting to add another ₹1.5 Cr over the next ~5 years before retirement/r2I.
So projected invested corpus at retirement: ~₹5.5 Cr
Retirement Plan
I plan to live in India after retirement.
Basic assumptions:
- No rent (own house)
- Moderate lifestyle
- Some flexibility for travel and healthcare
- Potential small income from farm and family business later but not counting on it.
Questions
-
What would be a good portfolio structure for retirement income with a ₹5–5.5 Cr corpus in India?
-
Should I increase equity exposure now (currently only ~25%) while I still have earning years left?
-
What are good income-generating investments post retirement?
(e.g., dividend ETFs, SWP from mutual funds, bonds, REITs, etc.)
-
Any suggestions to optimize the gold allocation (currently ~20%)?
-
Would you recommend bucket strategy vs SWP vs dividend approach?
-
If targeting a 3–3.5% safe withdrawal rate, is this corpus sufficient?
Goal
My main goal is stable retirement income with inflation protection rather than aggressive growth.
Any suggestions on:
- asset allocation
- tax-efficient withdrawal strategies for UK citizen
- investment vehicles in India
- risk management
would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance!
