My Lyric Challenge
It's time for another Lyric Challenge! Name this iconic, upbeat 1960s pop-rock hit by these "easy-go dance movers" with top-notch harmonies, who recorded it first. (Bonus points if you can tell me who didn't participate in the recording of this song?) Please post your guesses so I can see that you played.
P.S. If you don't want to be on my tag list anymore then please DM me and I'll remove you.
This song was written by Neil Diamond, who originally envisioned it as a country song(pitched to Eddy Arnold). Released in late 1966, it became the biggest selling single of 1967. Only three of the four members participated in the recording, alongside session musicians. They had their own TV show that lasted 2 seasons (from September 12, 1966, to March 25, 1968). Despite it being a "manufactured" hit, Neil Diamond was "thrilled" with their version because he wanted his songs on the charts. The song was famously covered by Smash Mouth which was featured in Shrek specifically because of its opening line.
"I thought love was more or less a given thing Seems the more I gave, the less I got What's the use in tryin'? All you get is pain When I needed sunshine, I got rain"
