Passed CGEIT today sharing what actually helped me

Hey everyone,

I passed the CGEIT exam today and honestly I still feel a bit relieved more than anything. This one had been on my mind for a while because CGEIT isn’t just about memorising concepts — a lot of the questions really test how well you understand governance, strategy alignment, and decision-making scenarios.

A small story from my prep that might help someone here: about a month ago I did my first full practice test and realised I was approaching questions too technically” I was thinking like an engineer instead of thinking from an executive governance perspective. That was kind of my wake-up moment. CGEIT questions often want the governance decision, not the technical fix.

After that I changed my approach and focused more on understanding the reasoning behind answers. I also started doing a lot of practice questions to see different scenarios. One resource that genuinely helped me was the practice tests from CertsTopic. I wasn’t using them to memorise questions, but more to understand the patterns and how governance questions are framed. That really helped me adjust my mindset for the exam.

During the actual exam, I noticed many questions were scenario-based where multiple answers looked correct, but one aligned better with governance principles and enterprise value.

My general prep looked something like this:

• Reviewed the main CGEIT domains and governance frameworks

• Focused on understanding business alignment and risk oversight concepts

• Did regular practice questions to test my reasoning

• Carefully reviewed explanations for questions I got wrong

One tip I’d give: when you read a question, think “What would an enterprise governance leader prioritise here? That perspective helped me eliminate a lot of wrong options.

Anyway, just wanted to share while it's still fresh. This community helped me during prep, so hopefully this gives some motivation to anyone currently studying.

Happy to answer questions if anyone is preparing for CGEIT.
