Ink bleeding

Hey guys, I got a tattoo from my freshly apprentice friend for a cover-up and went out for drinks that night not knowing that it might affect the tattoo, the tattoo has now had ink bleeding, is that because of the drinking or the needle depth? I don't really care about the ink bleeding. The experience and the fact I don't have a stupid sentence on my leg anymore means more to me. I would however like to know about what could have caused it to avoid it again as Google is giving me multiple answers.
