Excerpt from the 'the campaign of Shewa in Tigray' by Fisseha Abiye Ezgi. This was a handwritten account from 1896/7. It says "the Shewans looted Mekelle completely. They looted the houses alongside the roads. They killed many lives, and they emasculated all men, young and old"
