The difficulty of finding an actual reliable editor/writer/reviewer for your writing as a solo creator
This is probably a hot take and it isn't meant to dunk on any aspiring writers or anything, but has any other solo comic creators experienced this?
I'm not very confident in my writing, mostly because I'm a very "world first, characters second" type of writer and I often have weak character personalities in my stories. As a result I tried to find reviewers or editors for my story to flesh things out more.
BUT
Is it just me or are many self proclaimed writers and editors in the webcomic sphere just doesn't seem very good at all? Most of them don't seem any better in terms of writing skills than solo artists in the first place.
In my experience I had writers and editors (some of which I actually paid for):
- spell the characters' names wrong
- changing a sentence that "doesn't make sense" when the explanation for it is literally in the next episode
- saying I use too many big words (the big word in question is "acknowledge")
- did not catch typos at all I found them later myself
- telling me to restart because the beginning was "too confusing" (the new version they proposed is a completely different story to the point where it's a completely different genre)
It made me low-key more confident in my own writing because if this is what a lot of writers are like, I figured I was probably fine in the writing department.
