A simple “single‑parent log book / journal” has been a lifesaver for me

I’m a single parent, and a couple of years ago I started keeping a really simple log book to help me keep track of the day‑to‑day things with my kids. At first I used the Notes app on my phone, but after a while everything blurred together - scrolling endlessly trying to find something, forgetting what happened when, and feeling like the whole week was a fog.

I started writing things down because I needed a clear, honest record of what was actually happening in our day‑to‑day life: routines, appointments, overnights, school stuff, the little wins, the rough patches. When you’re juggling everything alone or co‑parenting with someone who questions things, having accurate notes helps you stay grounded in reality.

What surprised me most was how calming it became. When you’re doing everything yourself, it’s easy to feel like you’re constantly defending yourself or losing track of what you’ve already handled. Keeping a simple log reduced a lot of that mental load and helped me feel more organised and confident.

Eventually I made a really simple digital version for myself because I needed something I could update quickly on my phone and actually find things later. Same idea, same short entries - just easier to keep up with. It’s private, it’s just for me, and it’s become part of how I stay sane.

It won’t be everyone’s thing, but if you’re a single parent juggling shared care, schedules, or just trying to keep the reality of your situation clear, a little log book - paper, phone notes, or digital - can make a huge difference. It’s helped me stay calm, organised, and confident about what actually happened day to day.
