How much does transmission repair actually cost in the US? I was surprised
I recently started researching transmission repair costs because a friend of mine was quoted almost $4,000 for a repair.
After digging into mechanic estimates and repair guides, I realized the cost varies a lot depending on the problem.
Typical ranges I found for the US:
Minor repairs (sensor, leak, solenoid): $300 – $900 Internal repair: $1,200 – $2,800 Transmission rebuild: $2,500 – $4,500 Full replacement: $3,500 – $5,500+
Labor seems to be the biggest factor. In many cases it makes up 60–70% of the total repair cost.
Also noticed that repairs on European cars (Audi, BMW, Mercedes) tend to cost more compared to Japanese or American cars.
I found a detailed breakdown with examples by repair type and car category here if anyone is curious!
