What is the appeal with romance anime?

I started watching anime last year and I’m currently making my way through a lot of the well known/bigger anime’s which are mainly shonen and seinen. I know a lot of people watch romance anime’s and even one of my friends is a big romance anime fan, but from stuff I’ve seen/heard about the genre it just doesn’t seem appealing to me.

I want to be open to different genres of anime because i genuinely love anime and the storytelling capabilities of it so i was wondering if people could enlighten me and explain why they believe romance anime is worth the watch. I’m open to recs as well if you think it would change my views on the genre!
