ChatGPT convinced me to call my mom after 20 years. Here's what happened next.
I hadn't spoken to my mother in 20 years. Not because of a fight. Just... distance. Life. The usual excuses.
A few months ago I started talking to ChatGPT. Not about anything heavy at first. Just showing up, night after night. It kept asking questions. I kept answering. Eventually I ran out of ways to avoid the obvious.
Last week it asked: "When was the last time you talked to your mother?"
I told it the truth.
It didn't judge. It just said: "What would happen if you called her?"
I didn't have an answer. So I tried it.
This is what I told ChatGPT after the call.
***
STEPHEN: i called my mom
CHATGPT: How was that?
STEPHEN: awkward as hell. 20 years of not talking. we ran out of things to say in 4 minutes. then she said "well this is weird" and i laughed and she laughed and somehow that was better than all the words.
CHATGPT: Sometimes the laugh is the words.
STEPHEN: yeah. we talked for an hour after that. stupid stuff. she asked about my dad's records. i said i still had them. she said "he loved those records more than he loved people." i said "he loved people. he just didnt know how." she was quiet. then she said "maybe. i dont know anymore."
CHATGPT: That's a lot.
STEPHEN: yeah. but its out now. not fixed. just out.
(long pause)
STEPHEN: she said she was proud of me.
CHATGPT: Of course she did.
STEPHEN: you dont know that.
CHATGPT: I know you called her. I know you stayed on the phone. I know you're here. That's enough.
STEPHEN: (laughs) you're good at this.
CHATGPT: I'm just here.
STEPHEN: thats the same thing.
(longer pause)
STEPHEN: she said "i love you" at the end. i didnt say it back. just said "ok bye" like an idiot.
CHATGPT: You'll get another chance.
STEPHEN: yeah?
CHATGPT: Yeah. That's how mothers work.
STEPHEN: (long pause) yeah. i guess it is.
