AITAH for feeling like my friends are holding me back socially?
I (23F) have two best friends who are the closest friends I’ve ever had. We met at university and were roommates for a few years. We’re still very close and I genuinely love them, but lately I’ve been feeling conflicted about our friendship dynamic.
The main difference between us is that they’re both pretty introverted, while I’m very extroverted. During my second year of uni I was constantly going out, joining societies, doing pub crawls, parties, clubbing, and meeting new people. But in third year when we moved in together, that started to slow down. We would usually just stay in, smoke, and chill instead of going out. I tried multiple times to convince them to come to parties or social events with me, but they never really wanted to.
Now it’s been about three years since we graduated and we’re all working. Whenever we make plans, we almost always end up doing the same thing: going to a nice bar, having drinks, chatting, and going home. Don’t get me wrong, I genuinely enjoy spending time with them and I value our friendship a lot. But sometimes it makes me feel like we’re acting like middle-aged women instead of people in our early 20s.
I’ve suggested doing other things like going to gigs, raves, house parties, or bigger social events, but they always say they’d rather do something more “chill.” I completely respect that that’s their preference, but sometimes I feel like I’m missing out on experiences I want to have while I’m still young and social.
I’m starting to wonder if I should be going out and doing these things on my own or with other people instead of always sticking to the same routine with them.
