stopped trying to convince my family I wasn't stupid. best decision I ever made
every family has a role for everyone and mine decided mine was the one who wasn't quite as sharp. not in a cruel way necessarily, more like it became the running joke nobody thought twice about. my cousin gets into a good program and my aunt says something like "see that's what happens when you apply yourself" and everyone looks at me. just for a second. but you notice.
for a long time I kept trying to expalin myself. like I'd bring up my grades unprompted or talk about what I was planning to do differently. which obviously made it worse. nothing says "I'm losing" like constantly defending yourself to people who weren't even attacking you directly.
junior year I just stopped. stopped talking about school at home entirely. stopped asking for validation, stopped givng life updates nobody asked for. I told myself I'd just quietly see what I was actually capable of without making it a whole thing.
got serious about actually understanding how I was studying instead of just putting in time. my best friend, genuinely the only real one in my circle, had been quietly crushing her grades for two years and I finally asked her how. she overhauled my whole approach, showed me how she actually reviews material instead of just rereading it, and put me onto knowunity to keep everything in one place, notes, flashcards, prep stuff. going from chaos to one thing that acutally works changed how consistent I was more than anything else.
end of the year I had my best grades since middle school. nobody made a speach about it. my mom mentioned it kind of quietly at dinner and that was it. and honestly that felt better than any big reaction would have.
I'm not doing this for them anymore and thats the part that actually changed things. the grades are just what happens when you finally stop performing effort for an audience and start doing it for real.
anyone else go through something like this? where you had to stop explaining yourself before you could actually make progress?
