Environmental Engineer from Canada considering working in Australia (Sydney) – looking for advice/experiences

Hello everyone,

I’m planning to move to Australia from Canada, mainly for the experience and the weather. Two of my best friends live in the suburbs of Sydney, and I’ve known them for more than 20 years, so having that support network there is a big motivation.

I’m a 29-year-old Canadian citizen working as an Environmental Engineer in the water/wastewater industry. I have about 5 years of experience in Canada and a Master of Engineering in Environmental Engineering.

From what I’ve researched so far, Engineers Australia recognizes my degree and work experience. My work is mostly related to treatment plant design and project management, and it seems fairly similar to the type of work being done in Australia.

I’ve also looked at job postings around Sydney, and it appears there are quite a few opportunities in the water/wastewater sector.

However, after reading some posts and experiences here on Reddit, I’m starting to feel a bit nervous about making the move.

I was hoping to hear from anyone working in the same field in Australia, especially in water/wastewater or environmental engineering.

A few things I’d love to know:

  • How is the job market for environmental/water engineers in Sydney right now?
  • Is local Australian experience usually required to get hired?
  • Are there particular companies or sectors that hire engineers coming from overseas?

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
