I'm in love with this girl and she is in love with me, but she just broke up with her ex and I'm scared that I'm the rebound
I (21M) am deeply in love with a friend (21F), and she has told me she feels the same.
We’ve known each other for three years throughout university, but our friendship was always superficial. While I felt a physical attraction to her early on, I never thought we were compatible enough for anything serious. That changed last November when we were paired for a demanding engineering project. Because our third teammate didn't contribute, she and I spent countless hours working alone together. During that time, I realized how much I truly liked her.
The situation was complicated because she was in a toxic two-year relationship. She is a quiet, private person, but she eventually opened up about how manipulative and emotionally abusive her boyfriend was. Though she knew the relationship was dead, she felt trapped. I eventually confessed my feelings, expecting nothing in return. She told me that under different circumstances she would have said yes, but she wasn't in the right headspace.
Despite that, we grew even closer. One night, while watching a movie, we shared an intimate hug that felt right, even if it also felt a bit immoral at the time. The next day, in February, she finally broke up with him for the sake of her mental health. She confessed her feelings for me but insisted that I wasn't the reason she left—she simply realized she deserved better. We agreed to take things slow to give her time to heal, but our chemistry was undeniable. Within a week, we kissed.
She told me she loves how I treat her and that everything feels magical. Apparently, she told a friend she wants me to be "the one" and our mutual friends claim they saw this coming for months. We now kiss, hug, and tell each other we are in love regularly.
However, it has only been three weeks since her breakup. I’m terrified that I’m just a "rebound" or a distraction to keep her from being alone. People tell me not to worry because her feelings for me aren't new, I've found out that she Had feelings for me for months and the breakup was inevitable, but the pace feels incredibly fast. I believe you don't necessarily have to be alone to heal, but I’m worried I’m not giving her the space she needs, but it just feels so natural.
Should I put on the brakes? Should I just let things flow since we are both happy and comfortable, or should I sit her down and talk about these fears?
