There is no 30 day grace period for vehicle registration renewal... kinda

So I found out today that the 30 day grace period the DMV provides on registration renewals is only towards the late fees that can be applied when renewing. Some cities and municipalities are no longer respecting the 30 day period in regards to issuing citations for expired tags and Aurora is one of them.

My tag expired January 31st and I was stopped on February 8th since I had not yet renewed because I figured I had until the end of February. Not the case apparently. The officer wrote a citation for expired registration and I was required to appear in court to handle the matter.

Today in court the judge explained that the grace period only applies to late fees and that the city of Aurora is no longer respecting the grace period and will issue citation for any expired tag. The judge personally believed this was wrong but he doesnt make the rules. Thankfully he dismissed my case when he saw my new registration but I had to pay $30 in court fees after sitting in the court room for 2 hours.

So just a heads up, there is no 30 day grace period
