Has anyone been diagnosed with hyperthyroid and how has that affected your treatment?

Seeking Advice

Ok, quick backstory- I’m 42, self diagnosed autistic and recently “officially” diagnosed ADHD. It’s been a journey over the last couple of months including three therapists, two mental health NPs and three medications. Finally seeing some good people and haven’t been on stimulants for long but am really hopeful with the changes I’ve seen already.

I had never suspected I was ADHD (which is crazy in retrospect and I have significant anger about the lack of awareness in women’s health) until about 6 months ago when I really started struggling severely in both work and personal life. At 42, and after I had done some research, I suspected that perimenopause was breaking down my coping mechanisms and also contributing to other symptoms like mood swings, irritability, loss of focus, anxiety, and even some heat intolerance.

So, for the thyroid part. My second PMHNP ordered me a bunch of lab tests and now it looks like I have “subclinical” hyperthyroidism. My thyroid levels are still in the normal range but my TSH levels are severely low- low enough to consider treatment despite normal thyroid levels. But from what I can tell, the symptoms and ADHD, perimenopause, and hyperthyroid all overlap and/or exacerbate each other!

Does anyone have any experience with how to tell the difference? Or how your symptoms changed when you treated one or the other?

I have an upcoming appt with my PCP and can hopefully get an endocrinologist referral in a couple of months, so not looking for medical advice. I also don’t really expect them to understand the nuances of how these things interrelate though, so any experiences or advice is welcomed!
