Enabling HDR bricks entire Bazzite installation?

I have two computers with identical specs (RTX 5070), both running Bazzite. On my secondary PC, enabling HDR completely breaks the installation to the point where I have to wipe the drive and reinstall.

As soon as I click the Enable HDR button, the screen goes black, disconnects and I can't do anything. After a force reboot I can get to the login screen, I log in, and the screen goes black again immediately. The only way out was a full reinstall.

The weird part is my main PC with the exact same hardware has no issues with HDR at all.

Setup:

  • GPU: RTX 5070 (both PCs)
  • OS: Bazzite (bazzite-nvidia-open)
  • Display server: Wayland (KDE Plasma)
  • Driver: open kernel module

What I've tried:

  • Booting into previous ostree deployment — both entries broken after HDR crash
  • Bootloader restore tool from live USB — did not fix it
  • Full reinstall was the only recovery option

Questions:

  1. Is HDR on Wayland + Nvidia just broken on Bazzite right now?
  2. Why would this affect one PC but not the other with identical hardware?
  3. Is there a safe way to test HDR without risking bricking the install?

Any help appreciated.
