My A1 is on Firmware 1.3 - downsides to updating?

I bought a used A1 that's still onfirmware v 1.3. I've read mixed posts online about upgrading to the latest firmware and boards being fried. I was wondering if anyone here had a suggestions or if I should be wary of updating?

I know you can't go to v 4.0 instantly, but I can't even go to 2.01 without first updating. I want to make sure I'm not going to risk frying my board or breaking it.
