Struggling with the FUNNY TEACHER in Uni
Hi everybody, I’m looking for a suggestion about this situation/ just wondering whether it is a common experience.
I absolutely adore the formality of university life. I love that formal talk has specific scripts I can follow, and the serenity of knowing we are just going to talk about the subject is unmatched. But this year, we have ‘the funny teacher’ - the one who curses and makes cringe sex jokes, beloved by everyone but me. I hate knowing that he has complete authority but plays charades in class and downplays his role by being all chatty, even making jokes about us. I’ve become a target because he believes my stimming is an anxiety response, giving me variations of ‘Don’t worry, I’m not gonna eat you’. He teaches the subject I want to write my thesis on, so I had to meet him. I completely froze during his prolonged small talk, unable to figure out what was appropriate to say. He also confused my inability to look him in the eye (when we finally got to the thesis part and I needed to concentrate) as shyness that he, Prince Charming, has to fix. He’s now pushed me into a laboratory program with other students and teachers from abroad, which includes aperitifs where he wants me to ‘open up’. I should have stated my boundaries right there (and tell him not to make assumptions about me and act upon them), but I didn’t. Now I’m wondering, should I tell him I’m autistic? I feel it could be an educational moment, but I’m not sure I'll be comfortable. Also I foresee having this kind of problem in the future, even at the program's social events. How do I tackle this?
