travel abroad question re: housing

I have a question about studying abroad, if anyone has had this experience. My kid's planning on living off-campus for Fall and go to Rome in Spring. He lived on campus, with room & board and food plan the last few years. I'm just wondering if it's going to work out for him to do that without study-abroad locking him into a full year of room and board or something. any thoughts?
